Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Announces $400 Million Investment in India

American semiconductor giant Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has revealed plans to invest a staggering $400 million in India over the next five years. The strategic investment will encompass the establishment of a cutting-edge AMD campus in Bangalore, Karnataka, serving as the company's largest design center. Additionally, AMD aims to create approximately 3,000 new engineering roles by the end of 2028, reinforcing its commitment to India's flourishing semiconductor ecosystem.

The state-of-the-art AMD campus in Bangalore is slated to open its doors before the close of 2023, heralding a significant milestone in the company's enduring presence in India. The investment by AMD is bolstered by the Indian government's pro-active policy initiatives aimed at fostering growth in the semiconductor industry.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship, warmly welcomed AMD's ambitious decision. He emphasized that the establishment of AMD's largest R&D design center in India and the expansion of the India-AMD partnership would play a pivotal role in cultivating a world-class semiconductor design and innovation ecosystem. Furthermore, it will present a plethora of opportunities for India's highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of transforming India into a global talent hub.

AMD's journey in India's semiconductor landscape began in 2001 when the company set up its first site in New Delhi. Over the years, AMD has steadily grown its presence in India, and with the upcoming 500,000-square-foot Bangalore campus, the company will have a total of 10 locations across Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. The expansion underscores AMD's unwavering commitment to fostering innovation in India, in alignment with the India Semiconductor Mission.

Mark Papermaster, Executive Vice President, and Chief Technology Officer of AMD expressed his enthusiasm for the investment, highlighting the remarkable growth the company has witnessed in India. From its humble beginnings with just a few employees in 2001, AMD now boasts a workforce of over 6,500 in the country. The expansion of their presence in Bangalore reflects AMD's dedication to driving technological advancements and supporting India's aspirations in the semiconductor domain.

With the government's proactive support and AMD's sustained investments, the Indian semiconductor industry is poised for remarkable growth. The infusion of cutting-edge technologies and the influx of engineering talent will foster an ecosystem that nurtures innovation and drives India towards self-reliance in the semiconductor space.

As AMD solidifies its position as a prominent player in India's semiconductor landscape, the nation's ambition to become a global hub for semiconductor design and research receives a tremendous boost. The company's commitment to nurturing India's talent pool and driving innovation stands as a testament to the potential of India's semiconductor industry on the global stage. The exciting future holds promises of transformative advancements and a mutually beneficial partnership between AMD and India, propelling the country into a new era of technological leadership.
