In a significant stride towards bolstering India's technological prowess, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for three semiconductor projects worth approximately ₹1.25 lakh crore via video conferencing on Wednesday. Addressing the nation's youth simultaneously, PM Modi emphasized the pivotal role of these initiatives in India's journey to become a leading hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technology development.
The cornerstone projects encompass:
Semiconductor Fabrication Facility at Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), Gujarat: Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) will spearhead this endeavor under the Modified Scheme for setting up semiconductor fabs in India. With a colossal investment surpassing ₹91,000 crore, this landmark facility heralds the inauguration of India's maiden commercial semiconductor fab.
Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) Facilities: Two OSAT facilities are slated for development, with Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) undertaking the project in Morigaon, Assam, and CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited leading the initiative in Sanand, Gujarat. The Morigaon facility, under the Modified Scheme for Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP), will witness an investment of around ₹27,000 crore. Meanwhile, the OSAT facility in Sanand is set to receive an investment of approximately ₹7,500 crore.
PM Modi underscored the transformative potential of these projects in fostering India's semiconductor ecosystem, which is poised to generate a plethora of employment opportunities. These initiatives are not only expected to create numerous job openings within the semiconductor industry but also catalyze employment growth in allied sectors such as electronics and telecommunications.
Furthermore, the prime minister's vision aligns with positioning India as a global powerhouse in semiconductor innovation and production, thereby propelling the nation towards technological self-reliance and enhancing its competitiveness on the global stage.
The inauguration ceremony witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across over 60,000 educational institutions, reaffirming the youth's pivotal role in India's technological advancement. PM Modi urged young tech enthusiasts to actively engage in shaping the country's technological trajectory, emphasizing the importance of their contribution towards realizing the vision of a technologically empowered India.
With a firm commitment to fostering innovation and embracing cutting-edge technologies, India embarks on a transformative journey towards becoming a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing and design.
